TALKING TO...  HUGH DILLON

THOM ERNST     JULY 27, 2009

As the lead singer of The Headstones, Hugh Dillon became Canada’s first homegrown, home-ground rock star. He was the portrait of the artist as an angry young man. But Dillon’s anger was cool. And it produced some amazing music as well as some great sound bites. “No bullshit” would almost become his mantra when talking to press about his band, his music and now, as he becomes one of Canada’s major television and film stars, about his performances.

“What makes this album special?” someone would ask. “No bullshit.” “Do you think you’ll be able to reach a larger audience?” “Who cares?” And he’s on to the next interview.

Director Bruce McDonald cast Dillon as the lead in his ode to rock 'n' roll, Hard Core Logo, giving the rocker his start in film. Since then, he's has become the star of several television series, including Flashpoint and more recently Durham County.

Dillon met with TORO in a ceiling-to-carpet-windowed room on the 16th floor of the Corus Entertainment head office. The view of Lake Ontario is stunning but it gives way to his presence. Even after a full day of cameras and press, he’s up for conversation. There's no mohawk like there used to be. Mike Sweeney, the detective he plays on Durham County, is bald. But he owns this new style, the same way he's owned everything in his career, even the setbacks. This is him. No bullshit.

TORONTO — Hugh Dillon has become so established as an actor that some of his fans don’t even know he’s a musician. Hugh Dillon Durham County Season 2

“I’ve seen things now, after Durham County and Flashpoint, where I’m described as ‘Hugh Dillon from The Headstones,’ as if The Headstones were a TV show,” Dillon said.

You mean, like The Flintstones?

“Yeah, exactly,” Dillon said.

OK, just to set the record straight, Dillon was the front-man and vocalist for the Headstones, a Canadian band that rocked hard in the 1990s.

But as Mike Sweeney on Durham County and Ed Lane on Flashpoint, in recent years Dillon has emerged as a fearless and increasingly famous TV actor who is drawn to complex roles.

So is the 2009 version of Hugh Dillon — who has a new solo CD coming out in October — a musician/actor or an actor/musician?

Still a little bit rock 'n' roll - Globe and Mail - August 27, 2008

Hugh Dillon, who cut his teeth as lead singer of the Headstones, keeps racking up the hits, with a Gemini nod for Durham County and praise for Flashpoint

Globe and Mail - August 27, 2008 at 3:31 AM EDT

Rock 'n' roll never forgets, but times change.

Back in his wild days as lead singer of the Headstones, Hugh Dillon was all about the music, and any other method of creative expression never crossed his mind. And even if it did - some memories remain hazy - acting was at the very bottom of his list.

"I never really liked actors or acting back then," says Dillon with a smile and a shrug. "It was acting, you know? I wasn't great at working with others or the group collaboration. At the time, all I could handle was making music with four other people."

That was then, this is now. The transition of Hugh Dillon from rock 'n' roll animal to respected TV thespian has come full circle of late.
